Rugby: Mesnel issues warning to France

Franck Mesnel can't lose when France play England in this season's Six Nations Championship. The six-year deal with the Rugby Football Union announced this week means that his Eden Park fashion label now supplies clothing to both teams.

He describes his current role as 'a candid spectator' and is certainly direct in his perception that France go into their autumn Test series against Fiji, Argentina and Australia under pressure because of those June defeats. "We should be leaders, but at the moment we are only challengers," he says.

His critique is not, though, of coach Marc Lievremont, but of the structures under which he has to work. Mesnel says, "It is a matter of the balance between the clubs and the national team. We should be favouring the national team, but we are not."

His particular concern is the sheer length of the Top 14 season, with 26 matches plus play-offs. "This is far too long and it is simply not possible to play this much and still play well when it matters. It is simply not realistic and we badly need a new plan."

Elsewhere on the club scene Mesnel is delighted to see Racing, who had declined since he and his 'showbizz' contemporaries - whose jokily flash style was the genesis of the Eden Park brand - played in their last championship-winning team in 1990, back among the French elite.

At the same time he believes the expensively assembled team that reached the championship play-offs last season and qualified for this year's Heineken Cup is still a long way from the finished article. "There are some very good players, but they are still a collection of excellent individuals rather than a good team," he says - adding that this is not a criticism of coach Pierre Berbizier, who has said much the same thing himself.

He does, though, believe that the club is rebuilding itself in the right way. "I have complete confidence in Jacky Lorenzetti, the club president. I am 100% convinced that he is the right man and he is doing the right things."

Rugby: Young England seek new leader

Morley was not just prop forward and skipper, he was the 'chief' to this particular bunch of players. He would have led by example both on and off the field.

For all that fellow forwards Sam Burgess and Gareth Ellis are beginning to prove themselves on rugby league's toughest playing fields in Sydney, neither can yet boast Morley's longevity in taming the NRL, nor his unquestionable demeanour as a leader.

A squad that looked fresh when it set off, now seems vulnerably young and inexperienced without their pack leader to show the way.

I am not writing England off before the tournament even begins, but fans should not be too harsh in whipping the boys if the path up the learning curve doesn't go as smoothly as they would hope.

Replacement Garreth Carvell will arrive ahead of the first match, against New Zealand in Wellington's Westpac Arena on Saturday. He joins Stuart Fielden as one of only two squad members to have celebrated a 30th birthday.

For now, a lot of the current tour party are still in the foothills of their rugby league careers, certainly at international level. Having an Adrian Morley around would have greatly assisted their ascent.

The Australia and New Zealand squads are hardly packed with geriatrics, but in key positions they both have players with a few more years of domestic and international rugby on the clock - vital experience and know-how for big games and tense times.

New Zealand have not been hit with as many injuries as Australia have been; they have key players in top form; a ferocious pack; a devastating backline; an inspiring young coach in Stephen Kearney with international form on the board; an aching desire to put last year's Four Nations disappointment behind them; home field advantage; and a swaggering confidence, as was shown in their 50-6 warm-up victory over Samoa on Saturday.

Success for England should not necessarily be measured by a win or a loss in Wellington. If they can compete, that will be enough to give them a fighting chance of optimism ahead of the following week's engagement with Australia in Melbourne.

And if they can compete then as well, some of the young men will have grown up a little bit and will have earned the approval of their absent captain watching on helplessly from the other side of the world.

RUGBY: Ireland wants Wallace at outhalf

Ireland has four games planned over the month, opening with South Africa, then Samoa, before games against New Zealand and Argentina at the new Aviva Stadium.

Although Leinster's Jonathan Sexton and Munster's Ronan O'Gara are expected to head-up the outhalf berths throughout the series, Ireland will turn to Wallace as the best potential replacement if required.
A year from now, Ireland will have played two games in their pool - USA and Australia - at the 2011 World Cup finals in New Zealand - and preparing to face Russia and then Italy.

And it is the World Cup that Ireland has in mind by playing Wallace in a position he has not played regularly for several seasons now.

However, to aid the Irish management, Wallace will also have to play in the No 10 shirt with Ulster – and the first occasion could come this weekend against Connacht in Galway.

The News Letter understands there are a number of directives from the Ireland management to all the Provinces in respect of downtime for front line internationals, which has already been well documented, but head coach, Declan Kidney is also asking the Provincial management teams to follow some other directions.

Wallace at outhalf is understood to be one of those orders, but Ulster were unable to make any comment on the situation yesterday.

Wallace would have expected to be involved in the November Test series in the midfield, having impressed almost a year ago during the series, in spite of the National side under utilising him during the Six Nations campaign this year.

Ireland opens that series against South Africa and then face Samoa, and that would be the likely match for Wallace to be slotted in at outhalf.

It is perhaps not the news Ulster's Niall O'Connor or Ian Humhreys would have wanted to hear, given that they would have been hoping to maybe make the cut.

He is bound to be on the Irish radar at this stage and it would be no surprise to see him invited to join the extended National panel next month.

Ireland Rugby epresents the island of Ireland in rugby union and competes annually in the Six Nations Championship and every four years in the Rugby World Cup, where they have been eliminated at the quarter-final stage in all but two competitions (1999 and 2007). Ireland is also one of the four unions which make up the British and Irish Lions - players eligible to play for Ireland are also eligible for the Lions.

The Six Nations Championship held every year in February and March is Ireland's only annual tournament. It is contested against England, France, Italy, Scotland and Wales. Ireland was a member of the inaugural Home Nations in 1883 with France and Italy joining later to form the Five and Six Nations respectively. Ireland won their first championship in 1894, winning the Triple Crown also. Ireland's first Grand Slam occurred in the 1948 season and their second in the 2009 season. In total Ireland have been champions on eleven occasions.

France is one of the strongest rugby nations in Europe and is currently the highest ranked. Rugby was introduced to France in 1872 by the British, and on New Year's Day 1906 the national side played its first Test match against New Zealand in Paris.

France played sporadically against the Home Nations until they joined them to form a Five Nations tournament in 1910. France also competed in the rugby competitions at early Summer Olympics, winning the gold medal in 1900 and two silver medals in the 1920s. France came of age during the 1950s and 1960s, and won their first Five Nations title outright in 1959. They won their first Grand Slam in 1968.
